Ultra High Quality Record (UHQR)

UHQR by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab

Ultra High Quality Record (UHQR) was the name for records distributed in the 1980s, which were pressed by the Japanese press plant JVC on particularly low-noise “super vinyl”. UHQR releases were made by various labels such as Telarc or Reference Recordings. However, the name was sold through the UHQR releases from Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab. Similar to today’s One Step Ultradiscs, the plates were assembled in a cardboard box instead of in conventional plate covers. Due to the high press quality and the small runs of usually only 5000 pieces with a numbered certificate, these publications are now sought-after and high-priced collectibles.

UHQR by Analogue Productions

In the meantime, Analogue Productions has acquired the rights to the abbreviation UHQR from JVC and is releasing its own reissues in small editions under the name. These releases are packaged in elaborate drawers and also include a numbered certificate. The plates are pressed on transparent vinyl and handcrafted by hand. Despite the relatively high sales prices of 100 to 125 US dollars, the first releases sold out in a short time.
